The Far Out Bring a Funk-Fueled Dance Party to Off Cabot
The Far Out turned a rainy Friday night into a full-on dance party at Off Cabot on March 6. The weather outside may have been dreary, but inside the small North Shore venue the mood was anything but.
The six-piece band, many of whom hail from the North Shore themselves, played like they were among friends. And they were. The crowd packed in early and stayed moving for most of the night, grateful for an excuse to get out of the rain and onto the dance floor.
Part of what makes The Far Out such a fun live act is their refusal to stay in one lane. Nearly every song came with a shuffle of instruments. Frontwoman Liv Lowe bounced between guitar, flute, and even bass throughout the set, while the rest of the band swapped roles just as often. Guitars, horns, keys. Nothing seemed permanently assigned, with nearly everyone taking turns at different points in the night.
Despite having no opener, the band had no trouble filling the evening themselves. The Far Out stretched the show to just over two hours, drawing heavily from their debut album, Greetings from The Far Out. The record’s mix of funk, rock, and pop translated easily to the stage, with grooves that kept the floor moving all night.
The band’s quirky sense of humor also made its way into the setlist. One standout was “Putt Strut,” a playful track inspired by Wii Golf that somehow fits perfectly within their funk-heavy sound.
Covers popped up throughout the night as well, including a particularly lively take on Long Train Runnin' by The Doobie Brothers. That one pulled just about everyone off their seats and onto the middle of the floor.
The Far Out describe themselves as a funk and soul pop band rooted in the chemistry of lifelong friends, and that energy is unmistakable live. Their sound draws from classic influences like Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, and Earth, Wind & Fire, blending tight harmonies, funky grooves, and a sense of joy that feels genuinely contagious.
Since forming in 2021, the band has quickly become a staple in the Boston music scene. In 2025, they took home Live Act of the Year at the New England Music Awards, while their debut record earned nominations for Album of the Year at both the NEMAs and the Boston Music Awards.
Watching them at Off Cabot, it’s easy to see why.
