Red Bull Heavy Metal Brings Street Snowboarding to Boston’s City Hall Plaza

Boston’s City Hall Plaza traded concrete for snow on February 21 as Red Bull Heavy Metal rolled into downtown, transforming the brutalist landmark into a full-scale street snowboarding venue.

Despite cold temperatures and flat winter light, the turnout told the story. Fans packed the plaza throughout the afternoon, lining barricades and filling every visible vantage point (many climbing into trees or city architecture while police tried desperately to get them off) while riders rotated through three separate zones built across the square. Food trucks, merch tents, and a steady flow of free Red Bull kept the energy up, but the real draw was overhead.

Zones 1 and 3 delivered plenty of technical rail riding, with athletes picking apart the features in quick succession. But Zone 2 quickly became the focal point of the afternoon. Riders were pulled into position via rope tow before launching off the main jump, sending a steady stream of flips and stylish grabs into the gray Boston sky. It was here that the crowd reactions peaked, with each clean landing drawing a fresh wave of noise from the barricades.

The biggest buzz followed Zeb Powell, the X Games gold medalist known for his explosive, creative riding style. Each of his runs pulled phones into the air and tightened the crowd along the fencing, a clear reminder of his growing presence within the sport.

For a city better known for its brick and brownstones than its street snowboarding pedigree, Heavy Metal proved Boston will absolutely show up when the snow gets dropped downtown. Cold weather and overcast skies did little to slow the momentum as riders continued to send it well into the afternoon.
